Yacht Master Course Coastal Power/Sail

The Maritime School of the West Indies offers the Yachtmaster Coastal certificate, a recreational qualification for commanding sailing and/or power vessels up to 24 meters in length, within 60 nautical miles offshore. This certification is available through a live-aboard course lasting six days for sail vessels or five days for power vessels, and includes a practical on-water examination. The minimum age requirement for this certification is 18 years.

Candidates must either hold a recognized VHF Radio Operators Certificate or complete the IYT VHF-SRC Marine Communications course. When applying for the Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competency, the school must also request the VHF certificate if necessary. If both certificates are being requested together, please include a note indicating this. A sample note is provided for your convenience.

  • Please note: ISSA VHF qualifications are not accepted. (If you are unsure whether your radio license qualifies, please send a scanned copy of the front and back of your license to support@iytworld.com. We will verify whether your license meets the requirements for the IYT Yachtmaster Coastal certification).

It is important to note that the IYT Yachtmaster Coastal certification is strictly for recreational purposes and cannot be upgraded to a professional certificate. Therefore, all candidates enrolling in a recreational Yachtmaster Coastal, Offshore, or Ocean course with the Maritime School of the West Indies are required to sign an acknowledgment before beginning the course.

The Yachtmaster Coastal Sail Certificate covers the command of a sailing vessel with a sail area exceeding 80 square meters (861 square feet). Below is an outline of the course content:

  • International collision regulations
  • Navigational charts and publications
  • Dead reckoning and estimated position
  • Position fixing
  • Tides and currents
  • Pilotage
  • Safety at sea
  • Meteorology
  • Ropework
  • Anchoring
  • Boat handling
  • Docking
  • Passage planning

Exam

Examination Details: The examination consists of an oral and practical test onboard a yacht, plus a written theory exam. Candidates must demonstrate sufficient ability to handle, dock, and anchor the boat with confidence. Examination topics may include any subject within the syllabus, and candidates may be questioned on their previous yachting experience.

If the examiner determines that a candidate has not met the required standards, a certificate will not be issued. In such cases, a confidential report will be provided, outlining the reasons for failure and suggesting remedial actions that could lead to successful completion of the course. Completion of the Yachtmaster Coastal course does not guarantee passing the examination and receiving the certificate.

Enrollment Process: Candidates may apply to any participating IYT Worldwide Partner Schools offering this course. To apply for the IYT Worldwide Yachtmaster certification courses, a detailed yachting resume must be submitted to your IYT training school for evaluation.
