IYT Yacht Master Coastal Catamaran

About this Course

The Maritime School of the West Indies offers the Yachtmaster Coastal Sail – Catamaran certificate. This recreational qualification allows the holder to command a sailing catamaran up to 24 meters in length, up to 60 nautical miles offshore. This certification is achieved through a thorough 6-day live-aboard course, which includes a practical on-water examination. The minimum age requirement for this certification is 18 years.

To obtain this certification, candidates must either hold a recognized VHF Radio Operators Certificate or complete the IYT VHF-SRC Marine Communications course. When applying for the Yachtmaster Coastal Sail – Catamaran Certificate of Competency, the school must also request the VHF certificate if necessary. If both certificates are being requested together, please include a note indicating this.

  • Please note: ISSA VHF qualifications are not accepted. (If you are unsure whether your radio license qualifies, please send a scanned copy of the front and back of your license to support@iytworld.com. We will verify whether your license meets the requirements for the IYT Yachtmaster Coastal Catamaran certification).

It is essential to understand that IYT Yachtmaster Qualifications are strictly for recreational use and cannot be upgraded to professional certifications. Therefore, all candidates enrolling in a recreational Yachtmaster course with the Maritime School of the West Indies are required to complete an acknowledgment before beginning the course.

Holders of the Yachtmaster Coastal Sail – Catamaran Certificate of Competency are eligible to receive the “International Certificate of Competency” (ICC), provided they meet the criteria established by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (Resolution 40). Please note that the ICC Certificate will not specify “catamaran.”

Those who have obtained the Yachtmaster Coastal Sail – Catamaran CoC, can automatically obtain the “International Certificate of Competency” (ICC), provided the student meets the requirements as laid down by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (Resolution 40).  Please see this link for more information.  Please note that the ICC Certificate will not state “catamaran”.
