The sun rises over the turquoise waters of St. Maarten, painting the sky in soft hues of pink and gold. The gentle rocking of the catamaran stirs the family awake—mom and dad step onto the deck with coffee in hand, breathing in the fresh Caribbean air, while their two kids peek out from their cabin, eyes wide with excitement. Today isn’t just another day on vacation—it’s the start of their family’s journey into the world of sailing.
At the Maritime School of the West Indies, we believe sailing isn’t just a skill—it’s an adventure, a way to bring people together, and a pathway to lifelong memories. That’s why our Liveaboard Catamaran Course isn’t just about teaching individuals how to sail; it’s about immersing families in an interactive, hands-on learning environment where parents and kids alike can experience the joy of life at sea.
For mom and dad, this is the chance to earn their IYT certification and gain the skills and confidence needed to charter their boat one day. But for the kids—though they’re too young for official certification—the experience is just as exciting. They get to be part of the crew, learning alongside their parents, tying knots, spotting dolphins from the bow, and taking the wheel under the guidance of an experienced instructor.
Forget stuffy classrooms—this is hands-on learning at its finest. The Caribbean isn’t just a backdrop; it’s your classroom. Each day unfolds as a new chapter in the family’s adventure:
🌊 Navigating the Open Water – Dad takes the helm as the instructor explains course-plotting and GPS navigation. The kids watch the compass spin as they help “steer” the boat toward the next island.
🏝 Island-Hopping & Exploration – The family sails toward Anguilla, dropping anchor in a secluded bay. The kids jump in for a snorkeling session, marveling at the colorful fish below, while mom and dad practice anchoring techniques under the instructor’s watchful eye.
⛵ Mastering the Art of Sailing – The wind picks up, and it’s time to hoist the sails. Mom and Dad work together to trim them just right, feeling the boat respond beneath their feet. The kids cheer as the catamaran glides effortlessly over the waves.
🌅 Sunset Lessons & Storytelling – Evenings are spent reviewing the day’s progress, sharing stories under a sky full of stars. The kids practice their knots with a bit of friendly competition, while Mom and dad soak in the feeling of newfound confidence on the water.
This 5- to 6-day liveaboard experience is about more than just earning a certification—it’s about growing as a team, embracing new challenges, and gaining the confidence to set sail on your own. Our expert instructors create a fun, engaging environment where learning happens organically through experience. Every maneuver, every decision, every day spent on board brings the family closer to their goal.
For mom and dad, the course culminates in an IYT International Bareboat Skipper certification, preparing them to charter their own catamaran in the future. But for the kids, the takeaway is just as valuable: an unforgettable adventure, a sense of teamwork, and a deep love for the ocean.
As the course comes to an end, the family pulls into port one last time, tying up the lines with the confidence of seasoned sailors. The kids beg for “just one more day” on board, and Mom and dad share a knowing smile—this is only the beginning.
The Caribbean has taught them more than just how to sail. It has shown them the magic of adventure, the beauty of the sea, and the freedom that awaits those who dare to embrace it.
Are you ready to embark on a journey of learning, adventure, and family bonding like no other?
