IYT Master of Yachts Coastal/Mate 200T Theory and Practical

 

The Master of Yachts Coastal/Mate 200 GT course is an intensive program designed to equip you with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to command vessels up to 200 tons or serve as Chief Mate. Recognized by both the Maritime and Coast Guard Agency (MCA) and International Yacht Training (IYT), this certification is essential for advancing your career in the yachting industry.

Course Overview:

  • Duration: 6 days for sail or 5 days for power
  • Certification: MCA and IYT recognized
  • Mode: Combination of classroom theory and live-aboard practical training

Course Requirements:

  • Age: Minimum 18 years old
  • VHF Radio Operators Certificate: Must hold or obtain this certification
  • STCW Basic Safety Training Certificates: Must hold all 5 certificates, including Proficiency in Maritime Security Awareness if completed after January 1, 2014
  • Medical Fitness Examination: Current medical and color-blind eyesight exams (valid for 2 years)
  • Sea Time: 25 days at sea, 800 nautical miles, 2 days as watchkeeper, and 12 night hours. Candidates can take the course before meeting these requirements but will not receive certification until they are fulfilled.

Theory Course Syllabus:

  • Navigation and Chartwork: Learn to navigate using charts, dead reckoning, position fixing, and pilotage techniques.
  • Meteorology: Study weather patterns, forecasting, and their implications for safe navigation.
  • Safety at Sea: Focus on essential safety protocols and equipment usage to protect crew and vessel.
  • Maritime Law: Understand the legal aspects of yacht command, including regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Passage Planning: Develop the skills to create and execute detailed and safe voyage plans.

Practical Course Syllabus:

  • Seamanship Skills: Hands-on training in ropework, anchoring, docking, and general boat handling.
  • Practical Navigation: Apply your theoretical knowledge on the water, including real-time navigation and position fixing.
  • Vessel Handling: Master the skills needed to confidently command and maneuver a yacht in various conditions.
  • Emergency Drills: Participate in simulated emergency situations to ensure preparedness for real-life scenarios.
  • Docking and Anchoring: Practical exercises in safely docking and anchoring the vessel under different conditions.

Examination:

The course culminates in a practical on-the-water examination and an oral assessment conducted by an independent IYT examiner. You will be tested on both your theoretical understanding and practical abilities, ensuring you are fully prepared to take on the responsibilities of a Master of Yachts.

Upon successful completion of both the theory and practical components, you will be qualified to operate yachts up to 24 meters within 60 nautical miles offshore or serve as Chief Mate on larger vessels. This certification will open up numerous opportunities in the maritime industry, enhancing your career prospects.

Over several days, you’ll live aboard a yacht, gaining hands-on experience in navigation, seamanship, and vessel handling. This unique environment allows you to apply your theoretical knowledge directly on the water, practicing essential skills like docking, anchoring, and emergency procedures in various conditions.
