Candidates must provide verifiable evidence of their boating experience:
- Sea time must be aboard a yacht at least 10 meters in length (non-cargo carrying vessels for recreational or commercial charter).
- Experience must be documented and signed by the yacht’s skipper. If acting as captain, you may sign your own entries but must provide independent verification.
- A day of sea time is defined as 8 consecutive hours as an active crew member at sea.
- "At sea" refers to time spent outside any harbor, where a yacht could secure or anchor for an extended period.
- The required 800 nautical miles for the power endorsement cannot include sea time on a monohull sailing vessel under power.
To verify your sea time, scan your logbook and submit it in a single PDF document. Alternatively, you can use these forms available via your IYT account:
- IYT Testimonial for Sea Service
- IYT Candidate Sea Time Form
You must also provide:
- A current medical fitness examination and a color blind eyesight examination (both valid for two years).
- Military service days can be accepted as sea time, but each will be reviewed to ensure the experience is relevant to the requested certificate.
