IYT Basic Engineering Course

Requirements:

  • Hold the Boat Master Level 1 & 2 Certificates of Competency.
  • Be 16 years of age or older to enroll in the course.
  • SXM cannot issue a Boat Engineer license to individuals under the age of 18.
  • Night work is prohibited for those under 18 years of age.
  • Hold a Valid Medical Fitness Certificate indicating fitness for sea duty.
  • Possess STCW 2010 Basic Safety Training Certificates.
  • Experience with onboard power boats with propulsion of 100 KW and over is preferred but not mandatory.

The Boat Engineer Course (SCV Code) for vessels operating in the Caribbean is designed to equip candidates with essential engineering knowledge and skills required for small commercial vessels. This course is aligned with the Code of Safety for Small Commercial Vessels (SCV) operating in the Caribbean region, specifically for vessels up to 24 meters in length.

The course covers a wide range of topics including the operation and maintenance of 4-stroke and 2-stroke engines, fuel and cooling systems, exhaust systems, troubleshooting techniques, and the principles of marine batteries and drive systems. The course is highly practical, emphasizing hands-on training to prepare participants for real-world scenarios. Upon completion, candidates will be qualified to manage the engineering aspects of commercial vessels operating under the SCV code.
